Shusui (SHOO-soo-EE) koi are a grey-blue koi with a very striking red pattern along the sides of the fish and in the cheeks and fins. The Shusui koi also have no scales over their body except for a row of large scales along each side of the dorsal fin. These koi are very valuable to the history of koi as they started the scaleless variety of ornamental carp and, over the years, this scale-type has grown to over a hundred different varieties!

The Doitsu scale type originated in Germany when an Asagi koi was bred with a German Mirror Carp in the early 1900s. These Mirror Carp had a genetic mutation that resulted in certain growth genes not developing properly. This mutation was commonly seen in many types of carp including koi and zebrafish as well as thousands of other species and is visible in the form of a lack of scales or a fully scaleless fish. When the gene mutation was first spotted in Germany, the fisherman encouraged it and grew the population of fish with the mutation as it made preparing the fish for cooking and eating a lot easier and quicker. Eventually, many species developed to the point where every fish had the mutation.

After hearing about these scaleless fish in Germany, many other countries wanted them as they vastly reduced the work and time required to prepare meals and were therefore very valuable to the fish merchants and many other businessmen. One of these countries was Japan and once some of these varieties of carp, including the Mirror Carp, were imported into the country, fishermen quickly got to work introducing these new scaleless carp into their populations of carp to spread the gene mutation.

Delivery Policy

Livestock deliveries will be made either via APC or DX Livestock delivery service. This is a special service which is designed to ensure that your livestock arrives to you just as it left us, healthy and happy. Livestock service runs Monday - Thursday and is charged at £25 per box.

Please note that all services rely on third-party couriers to deliver on time and in good order. We will of course do our best to ensure that your delivery arrives when stated at the time of purchase, however, we can not be held liable for delays caused by the delivery company.

We have close to a 99% success rate when shipping livestock with our packing techniques!
We guarantee live arrival with a signature upon delivery. Someone must be present to sign for the package. We ship all our livestock on a before 1pm delivery.
We cannot be responsible for DOA when the product has been returned to the sorting / parcel office because you were not in to sign for the item or if the courier / postal service is late delivering, livestock is sent at the buyers risk.
If there is a DOA, we must receive notification of DOA via email (info@perfectaquatics.co.uk) within 2 hours of delivery.
Within 8 hours we must receive a clear picture of DOA. It is also important that any packaging / packaging damage is photographed should a claim against the couriers be required for mishandling our parcels.
Because shipping stress may cause livestock to become stressed, we may ask you to allow a period of time for the livestock to settle upon delivery.

All of our Live Fish and livestock are quarantined before sale. They are checked to be in good health and free from any sign of disease before being sent. However, we unable to accept any liability for consequential losses caused by disease (bacterial or parasitical) to your existing fish stock by the introduction of our fish.
Rights of cancellation cease to be available in the case of a contract for the supply of sealed goods which are not suitable for return due to health protection or hygiene reasons if they become unsealed after delivery
