Betta fish, also known as Siamese fighting fish, are one of the most popular tropical aquarium fish in the world—and for good reason. Known for their vibrant colours, flowing fins, and unique personalities, bettas are a fantastic addition to both beginner and experienced aquariums alike.
At Perfect Aquatics, we love helping fishkeepers find the right environment and products to support these captivating fish. In this guide, we’ll explore what makes betta fish so special, and how you can provide the best care for them at home.
Why Betta Fish Are So Popular
Stunning Appearance
Betta fish come in a dazzling range of colours—from deep blues and fiery reds to iridescent greens and even pastel shades. Their flowing, fan-like fins and tails are often compared to underwater artwork.
Low Maintenance (With the Right Setup)
Unlike many tropical fish, bettas don’t require large tanks or complex equipment to thrive. With the right care and environment, they are relatively low-maintenance and easy to keep healthy.
Interactive Personality
Bettas are known for their bold, curious nature. They often recognise their owners and may even follow your finger along the glass. It’s no surprise they’ve earned the nickname "the dog of the fish world."
What Makes Betta Fish Unique?
They Breathe Air
Bettas have a labyrinth organ, allowing them to breathe atmospheric air from the surface. This means they can survive in low-oxygen environments, unlike most tropical fish.
They’re Fiercely Territorial
Male bettas are highly territorial and should never be kept with other males. In the wild, they spar for territory using their fins and displays—but in aquariums, this can be dangerous without separation.
They Come in Dozens of Varieties
From Halfmoon and Crowntail to Plakat and Double Tail, bettas come in many shapes and styles—each with its own flair.
How to Care for Betta Fish Properly
1. Choose the Right Tank
Although bettas can survive in small tanks, we always recommend a minimum of 19–30 litres (5–8 gallons) for optimum health and happiness.
Includes plenty of swimming space
Easier to maintain water quality
Add a secure lid—bettas are known jumpers!
2. Maintain Warm Water Temperature
Bettas are tropical fish and need consistent warmth.
-
Ideal temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
-
Use a reliable aquarium heater and thermometer
-
Avoid placing tanks near windows or radiators
3. Keep the Water Clean
Clean, filtered water is essential for a healthy betta.
-
Use a gentle filter—strong flow stresses bettas
-
Perform weekly water changes (20–30%) - however this is conditional depending on the type of filtration you have, if you have adequate flow and heavy filtration this could be reduced significantly. (water testing will tell you if you need heavier or lighter water changes).
-
Use a water conditioner to remove chlorine and heavy metals

4. Add Plants & Hiding Spots
Bettas enjoy environments that mimic their natural habitat.
-
Use live or silk plants—avoid sharp plastic
-
Provide caves or ornaments for resting and hiding
-
Floating plants can also reduce surface stress

5. Feed a Balanced Diet
Bettas are carnivores and need a protein-rich diet.
-
Use high-quality betta pellets or granules
-
Supplement with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms
-
Feed once or twice daily—only what they’ll eat in 2 minutes
Betta Tank Mates: Can They Live with Other Fish?
Yes, but with caution. Bettas can live in a community tank, but avoid any fish that are:
Fin-nippers (e.g. tiger barbs)
Bright and flashy (may provoke aggression)
Other male bettas or colourful gouramis
Fish with long flowing fins that could mimic another betta fish.
Safe companions include:
-
Corydoras
-
Kuhli loaches
-
Mystery snails
-
Harlequin rasboras (in large tanks)
